Every time news of an icon’s death reaches us through social media, we hope it’s one of those awful internet hoaxes.
Sadly, sources in the US confirmed late yesterday (Australian time) that the enigmatic metal icon Wayne Wells, better-known as Wayne Static, died just days from his 49th birthday.
An official statement on Static’s social media pages read:
November 1, 2014 – Platinum selling musician Wayne Richard Wells, better known as WAYNE STATIC, passed away at the age of 48.
WAYNE STATIC was the enigmatic former frontman and namesake of Static-X, who later forged a successful solo career. Wayne was scheduled to co-headline tours with Powerman 5000 and Drowning Pool over the next several months.
No additional information is available at this time.
Static was due to commence a tour with his band and Powerman 5000 on November 4 – what would have been his birthday.
Coal Chamber guitarist Meegs Rascon, currently in the studio working on the band’s forthcoming album, was one of many in the music scene mourning Static’s passing on social media:
U were part of the Nu Metal Movement that shaped the metal scene in LA with Coal Chamber and countless others. We were a scene. Untouchable. Family. Hungry….. I will miss u brother. RIP. Im ur homeboy forever, wherever u are. Much love-M.
Dave Navarro, Billy Corgan and Papa Roach frontman Jacoby Shaddix were among others.
Whilst speculation is rife surrounding the cause of Static’s death, we here at Girl HQ can only offer our condolences to those in mourning – some of whom are our friends – and hope the media will report this with the dignity and sensitivity death deserves.
RIP Wayne Static, may you keep the Evil Disco alive wherever you may be.
