From Supanova to Comic Con, celebrations of pop culture are on the rise in Australia as more and more people let their geek flag fly. Mackay will this year play host to the first family friendly fan convention in a regional centre, with Sugar City Con on Saturday 23 August.
The event is being organized by a group of volunteers, who are striving to present Queensland’s best and truest pop culture convention, catering to fans of comic books, magazines, toys, games, movies, television, anime, manga, cosplay, artwork, sketches, apparel and everything else a fan could imagine.
Some guests attending will be Dean Rankine, who is a comic writer and artist for The Simpsons and Futurama comics; Wayne Nichols, who is an artist for Marvel and Dark Horse Comics; and Paul Mason, comic writer and artist for The Soldier Legacy.
There is a crowd funding campaign currently running in order to help secure more guest appearances and cover costs associated with venue hire and other expenses. Visit the Indiegogo page to support the campaign, or visit the official web site for more information on the event. Stay tuned to Girl at a Rock Show for further announcements.
