Our Mate Ed Adds New Aussie Dates

A ridiculous number of Aussie fans cracked it yesterday while trying to get Ed Sheeran pre-sale tickets online, prompting new dates to be announced today for most cities.

Thousands of fans took to social media to complain about wait times, being dumped off the site and having problems checking out as the ticket seller sites struggled to keep up with the huge demand.

General public tickets don’t go on sale until May 23rd, but tens of thousands of fans (and more than a few scalpers) flocked to the web yesterday vying for the first tickets.

Scalpers are already posting their wares for up to $1,000 per ticket, proving measures like a limit of four tickets per person useless in the war against ticket scammers.

Promoters Frontier Touring have announced additional shows in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane, which makes this the biggest Australian and New Zealand stadium tour next to AC/DC‘s 2010 jaunt.

It’s Official: Australia is Ed-sessed

It’s no secret Australia loves British pop star Ed Sheeran.

His debut single The A Team spent virtually all of 2011 at the top of the ARIA Singles Charts, and went five times platinum, selling over 350,000 units.

In 2013 Sheeran played Brisbane’s Riverstage. By the time he came back in 2015, he was selling out Suncorp Stadium.

After a notable absence last year, Sheeran returned in 2017 with two new singles, Shape Of You and Castle On The Hill, and made ARIA chart history by debuting in the number 1 and 2 spots respectively.

His new album, ÷ (Divide), features 16 songs. A whopping 15 of those are currently sitting in the ARIA Australian Top 50 Singles Chart. In fact, they’re all sitting pretty in the top 40, including the two debut singles which are still sitting at number 1 and 2.

His previous albums X and + are currently sitting at numbers 3 and 4 on the ARIA Top 5 Albums Chart, as well. Of course, ÷ is number one. Adele has taken out the other two places.

So what’s the big attraction to us Australians? Is it Sheeran’s seemingly affable nature?

Certainly, Sunrise co-host Samantha Armytage had plenty of good things to say when Sheeran appeared on the show during a promo tour in February, saying his rider request was one of the least diva-ish they’ve had.
“A bottle of Robinson’s squash, six cans of fizzy drink and one jar of Manuka honey,” she said, before adding, “strawberries and pineapple,” as well.

Media personalities Hamish & Andy showed off Sheeran’s good nature in this video, where they gave fans in Sydney an opportunity to peep at the star for $2:

Or is it just because he reminds us of the other great British ranga, Ron Weasley (AKA Rupert Grint), who actually appeared in Sheeran’s music video for Lego House?

Whatever the reason, Australia has certainly embraced Ed Sheeran – and we can’t wait for his next tour Down Under!

Aussies Get Grammy Nods

Aussie exports Tame Impala and Courtney Barnett have joined the ranks of Kendrick Lamar, The Weeknd, Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran with the 2016 Grammy nominations announced today.

Barnett and Tame Impala both dominated this year’s ARIA Awards, with Barnett winning four of her eight nominations, including Best Cover Art, Breakthrough Artist, Best Female Artist and Best Independent Release.

Tame Impala beat Barnett for the Best Rock Album gong, as well as winning Best Group.

As far as the Grammys go, each only have one nomination – Barnett for Best New Artist; Tame Impala for Best Alternative Music Album – but they’re in a talent pool with the likes of Kendrick Lamar (11 nominations), Taylor Swift (seven nominations) and The Weeknd (also seven nominations).

The 2016 Grammys will be held at the Staples Centre in Los Angeles on February 15 next year.

Is Ed Sheeran The New P!nk?

Our fave Pommy ranga since Ron Weasley is heading back to Australia later this year, having only left it a matter of days ago.

Ed Sheeran, who soared to fame with his smash hit The A Team a few years ago, has announced his second Aussie tour for 2015 – his fifth visit in four years – to hit stadiums around the country in November and December.

Probably just wanted to escape the English winter.

Side note – Sheeran’s buddy T-Swift is also in town around the same time, and has enough time in her schedule around December 9 for a quick on-stage duet… ahem, just in case management is listening?
